WHAT IS IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular high-stakes English language proficiency test for study, work and migration. Over three million tests were taken in the past year. IELTS results are recognized by more than 12,500 organizations, including educational institutions, employers, professional associations and governments, in 150 countries around the world and test centres available in 140 countries.

The IELTS Listening test assesses your understanding of spoken English through four audio recordings of native speakers, lasting about 30 minutes. You'll answer 40 questions in various formats to test your ability to grasp main ideas, details, opinions, and the flow of speech. Your score on this section is key to your overall IELTS band.
- Sections 1 & 2 – General topics (10 questions each section)
- Sections 3 & 4 – Academic topics (10 questions each section)

The IELTS Reading test evaluates your understanding of written English through three academic or general training reading passages. This section takes 60 minutes, allowing time for both reading and answering 40 questions in various formats. These questions are designed to assess your ability to understand main ideas, specific details, the writers' opinions and attitudes, and the overall structure of the texts.
- Section 1 – Least complex (between 10-17 questions)
- Section 2 – More complex (between 10-17 questions)
- Section 3 – Most challenging (between 10-17 questions)

The IELTS Writing test, taking 60 minutes, features two tasks that evaluate your written communication skills. Task 1 requires summarizing visuals (Academic) or writing a letter (General) in about 20 minutes with a minimum of 150 words. Task 2 involves writing an essay of at least 250 words within 40 minutes, responding to a prompt, and both tasks are scored based on coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy.
- Academic Writing – Summarisation and Essay Writing
- General Writing – Writing a Letter and Essay Writing

The IELTS Speaking test is a face-to-face interview designed to assess your spoken English proficiency across three distinct parts. Part 1 involves general questions about yourself and familiar topics, Part 2 requires you to speak at length about a given topic, and Part 3 consists of a discussion related to the topic in Part 2. Throughout the test, your fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation are carefully evaluated by a certified examiner.
- Part 1 – Familiar Topics (4-5 minutes)
- Part 2 – Specific Topics (1-2 minutes)
- Part 3 – Abstract Discussion (4-5 minutes)

Students on this level would struggle with basic communication and may not be able to handle everyday tasks like reading simple instructions or understanding conversations. This score is generally not sufficient for most immigration or study purposes.
- It's a requirement for certain UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) visas, such as the Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker visas, depending on the specific occupation.
- IELTS 5.0 and 6.0 - is often required for University Foundation programs or pre-master's courses. Some universities may also require a score of 5.0 for general English preparation courses or specific foundation courses in fields like Art and Design.
- An IELTS band score of 7.0 is typically required for several situations, including applying for UK visas for Nursing and Medicine. Additionally, some universities may require an IELTS 7.0 for postgraduate or specific undergraduate programs, especially in competitive fields.
- In the UK, for example, certain regulated professions, like speech and language therapy, require an IELTS score of 8.0 with no individual skill below 7.5 for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
